this was a brown snake about 10 inches long, kinda skinny, and he had one orange stripe right around his neck/head. what kind of snake was it? should i be afraid?

Most likely it is a ring-necked snake (Diadophis punctatus). Also, the ringnecks will have a brightly colored belly. it was a ringneck snake, they are completly harmless, and actually very gental, they hardly ever bite, and are alot of fun to play with
